Whats a Goji Berry?

fresh_goji_berries

Goji Berries have been used by traditional chinese medicine for centuries. Understood to be loaded with anti-oxidants and Vitamin C. They have shot to popularity in the UK and the USA in the last couple of years as part of the 'superfruit' trend.

Herbalists believe that the human body can greatly benefit from the Goji Berries to enhance the function of the immune system, improve blood circulation, protection of the liver, improve eyesight, as well as general wellbeing.

Goji is a superfruit because it contains a wide range of the following:

  • amino & Essential Fatty Acids

  • Amino acids are the building blocks of DNA and protein
  • essentail fatty acids are necessary in the production of hormones and in the functioning of the brain and vervous system. They are poly unsaturated acids, essential foods that the body cannot produce itself.
  • Vitamins and Minerals
  • Polysaccharides
  • Antioxidants
The Goji Berries contain 19 amino acids, including 8 which are essential to human life. These include:
    • Beta Sitosterol, an anti inflammatory that loweres the oxidation of cholesterol,
    • Betaine which promotes cardiovascular health, and
    • Cyperone which regulates blood sugar levels.
    • The Essential Fatty Acids includes Linoleic Acid which aids in the maintenance of normal weight.  The American Heart Association recommends that up to 10% of daily calories should come from Omega 6 sources.Linoleic Acid acconts for up to 90% of Dietary Omega 6 acids.
  • Goji Berries contain 22 trace minerals
  • The berries have 11mg of Iron per 100gms and many minerals rarely found in foods, germanium, selenium and phosphorous, as well as zinc, copper and calcium
  • Goji Berries are also rich in Vitamin C, having 500 times the Vitamin C Content of an orange, based on a weight for weight basis.
  • B group vitamins which help convert food into energy and
  • Vitamin E beneficial for skin health and often used in skincare preparations.
Antioxidants are very important in the removal of toxins from the body, and in preventing the oxidation of cholesterol, so essential for good heart health and blood pressure.
Research is now focussing on the relationship between high antioxidant foods and the conditions which can be the symptoms of aging, reduction of brain function, memory loss, and cell deterioration conditions such as arthritis, alzheimers, and even cancers.   Many antioxidants are anti inflammatory in their effects, this helps maintain a healthy cell environment, helping to explain their efficacy against cell deterioration diseases.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture, developed a measurement for the antioxidant capacity of foods.  This measure is called the ORAC Scale (Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity) and it measures units per 100gm of food.  Goji is found to be at or near the top of this scale.

    Antioxidants in Goji
Goji contains the complete spectrum of carotenoids, a group of efficient free radical scavengers that also enhance the immune system, and is the richest source of the family of all foods.  It has more Beta Carotene than carrots, a precursor to Vitamin A and essential for good vision, and thought to be very useful in heart health.  Among them is also Zeaxanthin, which helps protect the retina of the eye from light damage.  This becomes know as AMD - Age Related Macular Degeneration, the leading cause of vision loss as we age, and goji directly combats this.

      Polysaccharides
Polysaccharides are complex carbohydrates.  They are used by plants to form a barrier against predators, and so are good boost for the immune system.  They assit in the production of glyco proteins, which are used to help the body recognise nutrients or invaders and help the body to react accordinly.  Another wonderful benefit is that they promote alkalinity in the body, so many of our foods are acidic by nature, yet a blanaced pH is necessary for general well being.
Goji contains 4 polysaccharides that are unique (:PB 1/2/3/4) not identified in any other food.  One of the effects of these is to stimulate the release of Human Growth Hormones (HGH), also called "The youth hormone" and beneficial for energy, stamina, recovery......
... and the feeling of youthfulness.
